Specializing in timeless, classic shapes, Paterson Hat Company’s focus is custom made hats that will last a lifetime. All materials are of the highest quality and proudly sourced in North America. Using traditional hat making methods with antique, self fabricated and modern tools, each hat is made by hand one at a time by hat maker Braeden Paterson. 

“I got my start in hat making learning a strong foundation from milliner Samantha-Tara Mainville of Heirloom Hats. Taking that knowledge I moved back home to Western Canada to focus solely on working with fur felt starting with vintage hat bodies. Shortly after I received my first order by being stopped in the street with an inquiry about the hat on my head. I wasn’t thinking of making a business out of it at that point but I took on the order. After, orders kept coming in, I felt confident enough in my work in 2017 to start a business and began working under the name Black Tulip Hats. During that time I took on many different custom requests which led me to figure out what kind of hats I wanted to be making, classic, timeless shapes with focus on quality build. With specific questions in mind I travelled through the USA to speak with and learn from established hat makers. After returning home I began to work with my new found knowledge which brought me to the creation of the Paterson brand.

It’s been 6 years since I made my first hat. A time of a lot of self taught learning and a healthy dose of guidance from experienced hat makers. I will be constantly seeking ways to improve my craft for the rest of my hat making career. Everything to this point has led up to the creation of Paterson Hat Company and I am proud to put my name on every hat that leaves the shop.”
